Notes: (from book
entitled Old Gammon Families and Their Descendants by Rev. Wm. J.
Gammon, 1965, p. 158-159)
He made his will in Knox County, near Knoxville, some eight
miles northeast of it.
Likely all relatives will be interested in will of Harris,
Sr. as it is likely only official record of his children, and to preserve
space, there will be given with each child, some facts not in the will, but
reliably secured from other sources.
The will is recorded in Knoxville, Tenn. He made his will January 14, 1843 and parts of it,
especially, are very impressive.
He says he is in a low state of health, but of sound memory,
revokes all former wills by him, says “First of all, in the name of God,
Amen: I bequeath my soul to God
from whence it came, wishing my body to be committed to the earth in a
Christian manner, and after paying all just debts and legal demands, the
balance and residue of my property, I desire to be divided in the following
manner”:
First, I give and bequeath unto my grand son, Harris Cox,
son of James Cox, my mare, bridle and saddle. I want all notes and debts coming to me collected by my
lawful executors, and to be divided among all my children in the following
manner: The children are named, in
order of age, oldest first, it appears, wills to each child same, unless is given: John Gammon, $2, and to each one. John was made Executor of the will. Anne, now Anne Bishop (married 1797),
Lewis Leah now Robinson, Harris and one double coverlet. Dozier B. Lucy now Lucy Bibb (Some gave
this Levicy in a copy of the will, error
likely: now Ailcy Cox, Sarah, now Sarah Karns (spelled Also Kearns in
cemetery), and William B. To
Elizabrth Cox, I give and bequeath the residue of my money and property of
every description, “January 1st, 1843.”

Dozier Brawner Gammon
had two Tennessee Land Grants in Know County, Tennesse. The first in 1826 for 17 acres, E.
District, Book 13, p. 4, grant number 13066. The second in 1827 for 36 acres, E. District, Book 12, p
311, grant number 11364.
Dozier and wife Lavinia Tubeville moved about 1828 from Know
County, Tennessee to Putnam County, Indiana, to which it is said some
Tubevilles had already moved. About
1847 Dozier visited Decatur County, Iowa.
Decatur County had nice prairie land, no trees to remove, good land at
$1.25 an acre (later worth $2.oo per acre). Also on account of better schools, and the old trouble,
Slavery, etc. they decided to sell in Indiana and move to Iowa, where they
reared their families.

Biograghical and Historical Record of Ringgold and Decatur
Counties, Iowa (Lewis Publishing Company (1887)), p. 563:
(James Wilkenson
Gammon) JAMES GAMMON, deceased, son of Lovina and Dozier Gammon, was born
in Tennessee, June 16, 1825, and moved to Indiana with his parents in
1828. He was married in Monroe
County, Iowa, November 4, 1852, to Armilda E. Myers, who was born in Montgomery
County, Indiana, in 1829, and removed to Monroe County in 1850. Her parents were Thomas and Eliza
(Jones) Myers. They moved from
this state (Iowa) to Nebraska, where her father died, and where her mother
still lives. Mr. and Mrs. Gammon
came to Decatur County in 1855,
and settled on section 24, Eden Township, where his family still reside. He died February 11, 1886, aged nearly
sixty-one years. His family
consists of his wife, eight sons and three daughters. The four youngest sons are still living at home. Mr. Gammon was an honorable man and an
upright citizen. Politically he
was a Democrat; religiously he was opposed to the churches, and denied the authenticity
of the Bible, but believed n doing right at all times and under all
circumstances.

James W. Gammon
DIED – At his residence in Eden township, Decatur County,
Iowa, February 11, 1886, James W. Gammon, after protracted illness of some four
weeks with disease of kidney and liver which seemed to baffle the skill of his
physicians. He was born in Knox County,
State of Tennessee, June 16, 1825, and was in the sixty-first year of his
age. He moved to Indiana with his
father in the year 1828 and remained there till 1848, at which time he came to
Iowa and settled in Wapello county, but shortly after, located in Monroe
county, and in the year 1852 was married to Armelda E. Myers, and moved to
Decatur county in the spring of 1854 and settled on the farm where he
died. The fruits of his marriage
were eight sons and three daughters all of whom survive him to mourn his
death. All of his sons and one
daughter and his wife was at his beside when he breathed his last, which was as
quiet as the sleep of an infant.
He was a man of broad and liberal views and of positive convictions, was
always willing to defend what he believed to be the truth, but charitable to
all who might differ with him.
Reason being his guide his desire was to so live that to rest with
mother earth that those who should survive him might be better qualified to
live in harmony with nature’s laws.
His wife has lost an eve kind and faithful husband, his children an
affectionate and loving father, and the community a kind and obliging
neighbor. His remains were
followed to their resting place, in Eden Prairie cemetery, by a large concourse
of friends and neighbors, and was buried in compliance with his wishes, without
any funeral ceremonies.
